這場演講將回溯聲音轉換技術的歷史，從公共廣播系統到便攜式音響，並探討這些系統的設計如何與其多樣的政治與社會功能及影響緊密相連。從涵蓋中國的「有線廣播」網絡、冷戰時期台海兩岸的聲音對抗，以及擴音音響系統如何成為世界各地新社群與流行音樂可能性的基礎。本場演講透過深入了解聲音技術如何從一項科學發明，逐漸演變為深具政治動能與文化塑造力的社會技術，從而對當代傳播、政治運作與音樂文化有更全面的認識與反思。

“Without the loudspeaker,” Adolf Hitler is supposed to have said, “We would have never conquered Germany.” While Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph in the 1870s allowed humans to realize the age-old dream of fixing that most ephemeral of wave-phenomena, sound, onto material media, it was the loudspeaker that allowed for an industry predicated on the mass production of music, and a politics that might mobilize mass audiences on a national level. In this lecture, it will trace the history of sound transduction, from public address systems to portable audio, and show how the design of these systems is intimately tied to their varied political and social functions and implications. The lecture will cover the “wired broadcasting” network in China, Cold War era sound clashes across the Taiwan straits during the Cold War, as well as the ways in which amplified sound-systems became the basis for new communities and popular musical possibilities throughout the world.
